history

Parish Church of St. Gallus and Nikolaus

First mention

The history of Grünkraut goes back to the year 1236, when the place name "Gruonechrut" was first mentioned. How the place got this name or what it means is not known. "Chrut" is conceivable in the meaning of greut = clearing.

19th century

Until the secularization of 1803, when the Weissenau and Weingarten monasteries were dissolved, they owned almost all of the goods there except for a few farms. Politically, Grünkraut belonged to the Upper Austrian Bailiwick of Swabia . In 1806 this came to the newly formed Kingdom of Württemberg , where the place was added to the Oberamt Ravensburg , forerunner of today's district. The administration of the Gullen municipal administration is located in the green herb hamlet of Gullen .

Outsourcing

Ittenbeuren and Knollengraben were transferred to Ravensburg on February 1, 1973.

Population development

In the Oberamtsbeschreibung from 1836 44 parcels with a total of 923 inhabitants are mentioned. The population did not increase significantly until after the Second World War and is now just over 3,000, although a population-wise important part of the former municipal area was lost.

Religions

In the parish church of St. Gallus and Nikolaus

Like the rest of the surrounding area, Grünkraut is Roman Catholic. The parish is the seat of the parish of St. Gallus and Nikolaus. It belongs to the Allgäu-Oberschwaben dean's office founded in 2007 .

The Protestant parish, which was founded in 1869, does not bear the name Grünkraut, because the Catholic population denied this to the newly arrived Protestant Christians. Therefore it called itself after a hamlet adjacent to the church building "Evangelical Parish Atzenweiler". Today it includes the political communities Grünkraut, Bodnegg and Waldburg and the outskirts of Amtzell , Ravensburg and Schlier . After the Second World War , more and more evangelical expellees settled in Grünkraut. The diaspora community belongs to the Ravensburg church district and has 1,350 members (as of 2004). The church was built in 1885 according to plans by the Stuttgart building officer Felix Berner .
