history

The origin of the name Bodnegg, pronounced “Burneck” or “Bunneck” in dialect , is a mystery. While the suffix "-egg" is interpreted as a mountain ledge, the first syllable "Bod-" has been interpreted several times, including a derivation from the Celtic word "burren", which means a small round hill.

As early as the 12th century, the Weißenau monastery had a "curtem in Bodnegge", ie a courtyard in Bodnegg. 1357 sold Truchsess Eberhard III. from Waldburg some farms to the Weingarten monastery . In 1463, 1470 and 1486 the Weißenau monastery acquired many other properties, and in 1473 the Bodnegg parish was incorporated into it .

In the Reichsdeputationshauptschluss of 1803, the monastery is secularized and falls to the Count of Sternberg-Manderscheid . Most of the goods, including those in Bodnegg, went to the Landvogtei Swabia and thus to Austria, but as early as 1806 to Württemberg, which Napoléon Bonaparte raised to the status of kingdom . In 1806 Bodnegg was assigned to the Altdorf Oberamt in Württemberg , and in 1810 the Ravensburg Oberamt was established (since 1934 the Ravensburg district ).

Until the 20th century, the main town of Bodnegg was only a small hamlet with around 50 inhabitants, which mainly served as a church center for the many individual courtyards in the area. The population of the municipality is given around 1840 as 1408, in 1910 it had 1660 inhabitants. Only in the second half of the 20th century did the place develop into a larger residential community through the construction of several new housing developments.

Religions

Like the rest of the surrounding area, Bodnegg is Roman Catholic. The parish is the seat of the parish of St. Ulrich and Magnus in the pastoral care unit Vorallgäu (with the parishes Grünkraut, Schlier and Unterankenreute). Bodnegg is part of the Allgäu-Oberschwaben dean's office established in 2007.

The Protestant Christians in Bodnegg are members of the Atzenweiler parish , which is part of the Ravensburg deanery. The hamlets Hinterberg and Schmitten, however, belong to the parish of Wangen .

coat of arms

Coat of arms of the municipality of Bodnegg
Blazon : "Golden three-mountain on a blue background, above a silver sword with two diagonally crossed golden keys."
Reasons for the coat of arms: The symbols of the coat of arms, sword and key (attributes of Saints Peter and Paul ) are also found in the coat of arms of the former Weissenau monastery . They should point out that Bodnegg belonged to the Weißenau monastery from the 15th century. The Dreiberg indicates the exposed location of the church.

Partnerships

Bodnegg has a lively partnership with the Swiss town of Vouvry . This partnership was set up by the schools in the two municipalities to bring the students of the Bodnegg Education Center closer to the French language. In practice, this is implemented in the form of a student exchange, in which the students on both the German and the Swiss side live for three weeks with a host family in the partner community. In the meantime, a lively mutual interest has developed from this also at the club and local political level.

Culture and sights

Buildings

Rectory Bodnegg

Outstanding sights and landmarks of the community are the baroque parish church of St. Ulrich and Magnus on the Kirchberg, which is visible from afar, and the parsonage belonging to it.

There are also two chapels in the municipality:

  • Chapel of St. Maria and Wendelin in Oberwagenbach, donated by Theresia People in 1866, with baroque furnishings from the Bodnegg parish church
  • Chapel of St. Agatha in Hinterhargarten, built in the 1st half of the 19th century

In the center of the village, the fountain with the "Bodnegger bread-eater" indicates the proverbial Swabian greed of the Bodneggers and the corresponding fear of the neighboring communities when the Bodneggers come to community festivals and the bread, which was usually free as a side dish, preferably without the " Main courses ”(e.g. meat) devoured them.
