Westallgäu
The West Allgäu is a sub-region of the Allgäu and today consists of large parts of the Lindau district in the southwest of the Swabian administrative district in Bavaria and the eastern parts of the Ravensburg district in the southeast of Baden-Württemberg (formerly incorporated district of Wangen ).
geography
The West Allgäu extends north to the towns of Wangen im Allgäu , Leutkirch im Allgäu , Kißlegg and Isny im Allgäu . In the east, the Westallgäu borders on the district of Oberallgäu , and in the south on the Austrian state of Vorarlberg . In the southwest, the Westallgäu with the city of Lindau borders on Lake Constance and thus indirectly on the Swiss canton of St. Gallen . In the northeast, the Westallgäu borders on the Unterallgäu district and in the northwest on the Biberach district . Large parts of the area used to be called Niederallgäu or Unterallgäu . The Adelegg , a foothill of the Alps, is also part of the Westallgäu . The Black Ridge is the highest point at 1118 m. The Westallgäu is one of the sunniest regions in Germany.
Places in the Westallgäu
Bavarian Western Allgäu
Today's Bavarian West Allgäu was also known as Ausservorarlberg until 1806 and comprised the dishes of the time Kellhöfe, Altenburg, Simmerberg and Grünenbach , which largely correspond to today's definition of the Bavarian West Allgäu .
Places in the Western Allgäu in Bavaria :
- Gestratz
- Grünenbach
- Hergensweiler
- Heimenkirch
- Hergatz
- Lindenberg im Allgäu (addition "im Allgäu" since August 11, 1914 because of the city elevation )
- Maierhöfen
- Oberreute
- Opfenbach
- Röthenbach (Allgäu)
- Scheidegg
- Sigmarszell
- Stiefenhofen
- Hamlet-Simmerberg
- Wohmbrechts today part of Hergatz
Often, due to its geographical and linguistic proximity, Oberstaufen is part of the Westallgäu. Lindau does not belong to the Allgäu landscape concept, but is often marketed that way.
Württemberg Allgäu
It is controversial which communities in today's Ravensburg district are part of the Allgäu. The affiliation to the Allgäu near Kißlegg and Wangen in the Allgäu is controversial :
- Argenbühl
- Isny im Allgäu (addition "im Allgäu" since 1973)
- Leutkirch im Allgäu (addition "im Allgäu" since 1974)
- Wangen im Allgäu (addition "in Allgäu" since 1936)
Wangen was given the name “im Allgäu” on November 3, 1936. This addition was justified with the promotion of tourism, a propaganda tool of the Nazi regime (see Strength through Joy ).
In Ravensburg and Bad Wurzach there have been tendencies since the 1990s to market the places as "in the Allgäu". The reasons for this lie in the better marketing possibilities with the landscape name Allgäu, which is considered attractive in the tourism sector. Companies that want to present themselves as employers in a region that is popular with tourists and thus want to attract new employees from other regions use the Allgäu term in these places.
