Scheidegg ( westallgäuerisch Schoidegg ) is a market in the Bavarian-Swabian district of Lindau (Bodensee) and a nationally recognized Kneipp and health resort .

geography

location

The Scheidegg market in the Westallgäu region consists of the main towns Scheidegg and Scheffau and a further 49 parts of the municipality, the largest of which is Lindenau. To the west and south, the market borders on the Bregenz district in the Austrian state of Vorarlberg .

In terms of its natural surroundings, the community lies on the slope of a ridge that is made up of folded freshwater molasses and stretches from the Pfänder above Bregenz to beyond Lindenberg from the west- south- west to the east-north-east. The municipality is located in an altitude range of 600 to 1000 meters above sea level .

In terms of settlement geography, the place has developed from a clustered village , which is still visible, even if today a whole series of larger, formerly agricultural properties in the center of the village have been converted into service facilities, in particular inns of various kinds, which gives the village a somewhat more urban character. The elevated school building also contributes to this.

Parish parts

The municipality has 51 officially named parts of the municipality (the type of settlement is given in brackets ):

history

Until the 19th century

The area around Scheidegg was probably settled in the 6th and 7th centuries by the Alemanni . Scheidegg was first mentioned in St. Gallen in 1255 due to the loss of a certificate .

The village and Weiler belonged to the large property of the St. Gallen Monastery until 1286 , again from 1532 to 1571. The St. Gallen Reich Benedictine Monastery promoted Christianity and culture. In 1296, Abbot Wilhelm Scheidegg transferred to Count Hugo von Montfort -Bregenz. In Scheidegg and Weiler there were Kellhöfe of the monastery, d. H. Administrative headquarters for the monastery property in Westallgäu. From this role - and from the location on the Old Salt Road from Munich via Landsberg am Lech and Kempten (Allgäu) to Lindau (Lake Constance) or Bregenz on Lake Constance - Scheidegg's role as a rural central location developed in the form of a market. The area, which was acquired by Habsburg in 1571 , remained with Vorarlberg until the Peace of Pressburg in 1805 ( Napoleon ) and then became part of Bavaria . During the Thirty Years' War Scheidegg was burned by Swedish troops in 1634 and 1635 from the plague struck.

In the 18th century, coming from Lindenberg , the production of straw hats developed in Scheidegg, which were exported across Europe. At the beginning of the 19th century, it became a hat factory.

20th century

Scheidegg's tradition as a health resort and recreation resort goes back to the turn of the century (the 20th century). When the first summer visitors came to Scheidegg after the construction of the railway line from Röthenbach to Scheidegg in 1901, the first attempt to organize tourism was made as early as 1902 with the establishment of the Transport and Beautification Association. When the construction of the Prinzregent Luitpold Children's Clinic began in 1912, this was the cornerstone for Scheidegg's development into a health resort . In 1936 Scheidegg was recognized as a high altitude health resort .

After the Second World War , a fresh start was necessary. The need to qualify as a health resort was soon recognized, and in 1964 the first "recognized Kneipp spa" was established.
