Ludwig Glötzle (born April 7, 1847 in Immenstadt , † December 27, 1929 in Munich ) was a German painter .

Life

Glötzle was born as the fourth child of the lithographer, painter and book printer Xaver Glötzle and his wife Johanna. In 1862 he entered the Royal Academy in Munich , which he left again six years later. One of his teachers was Johann von Schraudolph .

Works

Ludwig Glötzle is one of the most famous church painters in Germany. His art served church painting, he did not deal with national topics. At first he found it very difficult to be independent, as the neo-Gothic style prevailed in church building , which included carved altars and stained glass . It was not until the end of the 19th century that more and more churches were built in neo-Romanesque and later in neo-baroque style, in which there was space for monumental painting. His first works were The Outpouring of the Holy Spirit (1875) for the church in Durach near Kempten and the painting The Handover of the Keys to Petrus (1877), which he had painted for the high altar in his parish church in Immenstadt . Glötzle painted more than 20 pictures for the churches in Immenstadt , which were and still are to be admired in the various Catholic churches (including pictures of the three virtues (ceiling painting, 1904) in the monastery church of St. Josef ). He worked for years, especially in the Gottesackerkapelle, which he had known since childhood . In the church of St. Georg in Nonn near Bad Reichenhall there is an elaborate votive picture for the fallen of the First World War .

Other important works can be found in the Salzburg Cathedral ( Ascension of the Blessed , 1891) and in the Heilig-Geist-Kirche in Munich. Here he added the ceiling frescoes by the Asam brothers after the church was enlarged in 1888 . The frescoes destroyed in 1944 were reconstructed by Karl Manninger in 1990 . The first fresco depicts the restoration of a Christian state as it was in Pope Leo XIII's Bull Immortale Dei . is drawn and therefore shows this Pope and his example, St. Augustine with his writing De civitate Dei , as well as Mary, Thomas Aquinas and Francis of Assisi (see picture). The fresco above the current organ gallery shows Saint Cecilia as the patroness of church music.

The artist's creative power remained unbroken into old age. In 1925 he still painted the parish church of Bezau in the Bregenz Forest . His works also include altar paintings for North American churches as well as portraits , still lifes and landscapes. He left an extensive body of work. From 1879 to 1903 he was a member of the Munich Association for Christian Art .

The city of Immenstadt named Ludwig-Glötzle-Strasse in his honor .
