Hirschberg

The 1095 meter high Hirschberg, located in the municipality of Langen near Bregenz in Austria , is Scheffau's local mountain and has always protected the place from storms coming from the south.

history

Scheffau is first mentioned in a document from 1304 with the wording: "Benz Wezel von Scheffow sells his interest on his estate in Scheffow", from which one can assume that the Scheffau area was first settled around 1200.

According to stories, two nuns in Scheffau founded a small chapel in 1494, but a regular Sunday service was only held by the chaplains from Weiler from 1514 onwards . After the population and financial resources had grown sufficiently, the parish of Scheffau was separated from Weiler in 1694 and given its own pastor. Since the previous chapel had become too small, today's parish church of St. Martin was built in 1788/1789.

After the Westallgäu, and with it Scheffau too, came from Austria to Bavaria in 1806, Scheffau was raised to an independent political community with the community edict of July 28, 1808 and Johannes Fink was appointed first community leader. Famine and other catastrophes fall during his term of office and that of his successor. On March 11, 1834, a large fire ravaged Scheffau, destroying two houses beyond recovery and damaging two more. The Weiler-Röthenbach local railway was opened in 1893, as a result of which Scheffau received a post office on October 1, 1897. The new school was built in 1933/34, and the gymnasium and festival hall in 1956. 1972 Scheffauer could vote on whether their community as a result of administrative reform in Bavaria after Scheidegg or Weiler-Simmerberg should be incorporated. On the recommendation of the municipal council, the decision was made in favor of Scheidegg, whereupon the merger was completed on July 1, 1972.
