The fools' guilds maintain the carnival customs of their respective hometowns. This includes the organization of traditional events such as planting the fool's tree at the beginning of Carnival or the parade, which is often referred to as the fool's leap . Each fool's guild has one or more groups ( characters ) who wear the same costume known as fools . The respective figures are often related to historical events, legends or sagas from the home of the guild. In addition to the groups, there are also individual figures in many fools' guilds. Many fool guilds have their own fool call . The guilds are mostly organized as non-profit registered associations . The board of directors is usually referred to as the guild master .

Fools guilds were founded from the beginning of the 20th century, but especially from the 1920s. The traditional name of the fool's guild should also express the focus on the old carnival tradition and thus form a conscious contrast to the fool's or carnival societies, which were influenced by the Rhenish region. There are now an estimated 1,700 fools guilds or associations in the area of the Swabian-Alemannic Fasnet, which is increasingly spreading northwards into the Protestant areas of Baden-Württemberg as a result of new foundations .

Fools associations

Most fools 'guilds belong to a fool's association, whose task is, for example, the issuing and further development of guidelines for adherence to the carnival traditions, the organization of regular fools' meetings and the representation of the guilds externally ( lobbying ). The oldest such association is that founded in 1924

Other fools' associations are:

Of the fools' associations mentioned here, only the BSF and ONB are members of the Bund Deutscher Karneval .

The fools 'guilds from the carnival strongholds of Rottweil , Oberndorf , Elzach and Überlingen who have resigned from the VSAN do not belong to any of these fools' associations. They form the so-called four - league with one another without an organizational structure and written statutes. The Villingen Narro Guild , which has also left the VSAN, does not belong to the Alliance of Four.
