description

The "Theikenmeer" is an area of 250 hectares that has been under nature protection since 1936 . It is located on the Hümmlinger Pilgrimage Route on the 26.7 km long Sögel - Werlte stage .

The nature reserve with the registration number NSG WE 010 includes a raised bog , the Wehmer Dose, with a lake in it. Both are important resting places for migrating water birds. After successful waterlogging measures , the raised bog is once again important for animal and plant species typical of raised bogs .

history

With an ordinance of November 16, 1936, the area between Sögel and Werlte was declared a nature reserve. The district of Emsland is responsible as the lower nature conservation authority. Due to illegal drainage, the Theikenmeer dried up and silted up in the mid-1970s. Thanks to the initiative of young conservationists, illegal drainage was stopped and the lake was rewetted through dam measures. In the 1980s it was dredged again, later the neighboring "Wehmer Dose" was added as a nature reserve. Since 2008 Volkswagen Leasing GmbH has been making a project contribution to the Naturschutzbund Deutschland eV in cooperation with the group brands. One hundred percent of this is used to finance nature and climate protection projects and the like. A. used for the renaturation of the Theikenmeer.
