background

In the years 1995 to 2002 the Haseniederung between Haselünne and Meppen was redesigned in a natural way as part of the Hasetal test and development project. The aim was to restore the natural river dynamics and to restore the course of the river and the floodplain to a good ecological condition. For this purpose, dykes were dismantled or relocated over an area of around 450 hectares, oxbow lakes that had been separated from the course of the river during the straightening of the Hase were reconnected to the course of the river and old courses of the river were reactivated. The measures created flood plains that are again subject to the natural flow dynamics. In addition, the course of the river was lengthened.

In addition to the hydraulic engineering measures, ecological measures were also taken in the floodplain. For example, non-site trees were removed and replaced with deciduous trees typical of the site. Arable land in the floodplain was converted to grassland and forest .
