Euscelidius variegatus is a dwarf cicada from the subfamily of the chirps (Deltocephalinae).
features
The male cicadas are 3.9–4.5 mm long, the females 4.1–5.5 mm. The light brown colored cicadas have a characteristic dark pattern on the head, pronotum and scutellum . The hemielytres are covered with numerous black small dots. The wing veins are colored white.
Occurrence
The species is native to the Palearctic . It is widespread in Europe. The species was introduced to North America. It occurs there on the west coast of the United States and in Utah. The first evidence in North America came in 1947 in California.
Way of life
The cicada species forms one generation per year. The cicadas feed on a wide variety of plants including rice, barley, corn, sugar cane, wheat, sorghum, fruit trees, vines, tomatoes, and potatoes.
Harmful effect
The cicada species is considered to be the carrier of the Candidatus Phytoplasma asteris (16SrIII-A) bacterial strain , which causes the plant disease aster yellows ("yellowing of asters ").
