from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Rudolf de Haas (* 1870 ; † 1944 ) was a German Protestant pastor and writer.

Life

Coming from the Rhineland, de Haas studied at the universities of Bonn , Jena and Breslau . After a brief activity as a teacher in London , he took over a pastor's post in Charters Towers in the Australian state of Queensland for three years in early 1897 . He described his experiences there many years later in The Nugget. Stories from the Australian gold rush life , To the gold of the South Seas - A story from Australia's rough days and Fata Morgana. Experiences in the Australian bush .

He married Thea de Haas in Eisenach's Georgenkirche . The marriage produced a son. The six-month honeymoon took them to Africa. He was later transferred to Nazza , where he served as pastor from December 1911 to May 1913. Another trip to Africa in 1914, which was originally supposed to last four months, became a seven-year stay in the wake of the outbreak of the First World War , as Rudolf de Haas was drafted and later became a prisoner of war . He described his experiences from this time in several works, namely Der Poacher von Deutsch-Ost , The victim of the Wagogo , The mutineers , Askaritreue , The planter in the Kalundatal and In the highlands of the giant crater .

His book Die Meuterer , first published in 1927, was on the list of harmful and undesirable literature during National Socialism .
