Carl Ludwig Kirschbaum (born January 31, 1812 in Usingen , † March 3, 1880 in Wiesbaden ) was a German entomologist , professor of biology and museum director.

Life

Cherry was the son of the country's top mayor Karl Ludwig Kirschbaum (1771-1835) and his wife Johannette Margarethe Philippine-born Vietor (1779-1824). He grew up in Eltville . As a schoolboy, he started an entomological collection. From 1824 he attended the Wiesbaden high school. From 1826 to 1830 he attended the grammar school Philippinum Weilburg , where he was able to expand his knowledge especially under the influence of the bee researcher Philipp Adolph Schenck (1803–1876). After studying as a high school teacher from 1831 to 1834 in Göttingen, Kirschbaum worked as a teacher at the private pedagogy in Weilburg from 1834. In 1837 he moved to Hadamar Education and in 1839 to the Philippinum Weilburg grammar school, where he became vice-principal in 1841. In 1845/46 he taught at Hadamar grammar school. In 1846 he became prorector at the Wiesbaden high school.

In 1848 he married Hermine Eleonore, née Panthel (1825–1909) from Diez, the daughter of the Duke of Nassau's auditor and pension secretary for the recipe in Diez and later administrator of the prison in Diez, Friedrich Ludwig Panthel and Julie Pflug.

In 1848 he was appointed professor at the Wiesbaden high school and in 1865 he received an honorary doctorate from the University of Göttingen. Carl Ludwig Kirschbaum was a member of the Society of German Natural Scientists and Doctors . As early as 1843 he joined the Nassau Association for Natural History and in 1847 took over the zoological section. After the palaeontologist Fridolin Sandberger left Wiesbaden to Karlsruhe, Kirschbaum was his successor and the Nassau duke appointed him inspector (director) of the Natural History Museum in Wiesbaden (today Natural History Collections ) and secretary of the association. On March 3, 1880, at the age of 68, he died of a stroke.

Kirschbaum gave lectures on botany and zoology at the agricultural school Hof Geisberg and at the chemical teaching laboratory Fresenius . In his function as head of the zoology section and as head of the natural history collection in Wiesbaden, he has significantly promoted the expansion of the scientific collections and their presentation. In particular, he expanded the invertebrate collection. His contacts with other museums and associations were just as extensive, with himself being a member of 23 scientific societies.

The certainly most important work by Kirschbaum is dedicated to the cicadas (Hemiptera: Cicadomorpha , Fulgoromorpha ). The collection with more than 5,000 animals is kept in the Natural History Collections Wiesbaden . It contains more than 330 types , making it one of the most important European collections. In his monograph he describes 371 species, 172 of which are new to science. In addition to the animals he collected himself, he also worked on material from numerous scientists of his time.
