Adolph Schenck (born April 11, 1803 in Dillenburg , † February 23, 1878 in Weilburg ) was a German entomologist .

Life

Philipp Adolph Schenck was a son of Justice Councilor Johann Jacob Schenck (born May 23, 1763 in Siegen, † February 14, 1805 in Dillenburg) and Sophie Karoline, born. Jaeckel, from Herborn (1767–1836).

At the age of 9 he sustained a knee injury while playing, which developed into paralysis of his right leg; therefore he had to use a walking aid all his life. Against this background, his entomological collecting activities are of particular importance.

Schenck attended the pedagogy in Dillenburg until 1818, then the grammar school Philippinum Weilburg , where he passed the Abitur in 1821. He then studied philology, natural sciences and education in Göttingen and in 1824 passed the teaching qualification examination in the subjects natural sciences, mathematics, ancient languages and history in Weilburg. Schenck then worked as a private teacher and taught mathematics at the Weilburg high school. From 1828 to 1830 he worked as an assistant teacher at the Progymnasium in Hadamar , where he then held the position of 2nd vice principal until 1835.

On August 1, 1830, Adolph Schenck married Julie Stöckicht, who came from Braubach (* 1811, † November 24, 1882 in Weilburg). In the autumn of 1835 he returned to the Dillenburg Pedagogy as 1st Vice-Rector , held the position of Vice-Rector there from Easter 1841 to 1845 and was also appointed Professor during this time.

In 1845 Schenck was transferred against his will to the grammar school in Weilburg and in 1876 first senior teacher there. At his own request, he retired on October 1, 1876. Schenck was a corresponding member or honorary member of several scientific societies and associations. In recognition of his services to entomology, the Philipps University of Marburg awarded him the Dr. phil. H. c. and he was appointed bearer of the Red Eagle Order.

Services

Adolph Schenck is considered "one of the most remarkable German entomologists". He was the discoverer and describer of numerous species of insects, in particular ants, wasps and bees belonging to the hymenoptera. Of the bee species known from Germany, 43 were scientifically described by Schenck for the first time and named with the name that is still valid today. A large number of the bee species he named are on the red list today. He described u. a. the black-bellied leafcutter bee ( Megachile nigriventris ) . Among the ants he described u. a. 1852 the social-parasitic ant species Strongylognathus testaceus and the also social-parasitic, worker-free Anergates atratulus , whose males are larva-like and wingless.

A large part of his natural history collections has been lost, only a small part, the around 13,750 specimens of Hymenoptera , came to the Senckenberg Museum in Frankfurt in 1968 . The largest part of the collection of bees from Carl Ludwig Kirschbaum that he worked on still exists in the Wiesbaden Museum , including the specimens described for the first time. Schenck wrote a large number of scientific publications about his research.
