The Meppener Kuhweide is a nature reserve in the Lower Saxon town of Meppen in the Emsland district .
The nature reserve with the sign NSG WE 157 is 65 hectares in size. It is almost completely part of the FFH area "Ems". The area has been a nature reserve since December 31, 1999. It replaces the designated nature reserve of the same name on February 23, 1985, with which the juniper grove in the north of the current reserve was placed under protection. The responsible lower nature conservation authority is the district of Emsland.
The nature reserve is located southwest of Meppen in a bend in the Ems . It preserves a river dune landscape with an old arm of the Ems and a preserved of the once typical of the Ems Hudelandschaft . The pasture areas that for centuries as a commons were used willow, are of sandy dry grasslands dominated and juniper - and sloe bushes interspersed. In the southern part of the nature reserve there is a hut forest that is still grazed. Here are oaks predominate. In the east of the nature reserve, as in the adjacent areas, oil is extracted.
In the north of the nature reserve there is a circular route, the Werner-Menne-Path, from which parts of the nature reserve can be experienced. At the jetty in Rühle on the opposite bank, an information board indicates the sand martin colony living on a natural steep bank in the nature reserve .
