The Emsauen between Herbrum and Vellage are a nature reserve in the Lower Saxony town of Papenburg and the municipality of Rhede (Ems) in the Emsland district and in the town of Weener in the Leer district .

The nature reserve with the registration number NSG WE 268 is 867  hectares in size. Of this, 766 hectares are in the Emsland district and 101 hectares in the Leer district. It is completely part of the FFH area "Ems" and the EU bird sanctuary "Emstal from Lathen to Papenburg". In the northwest it borders on the nature reserve " Brualer Hammrich " and in the north on the nature reserve " Vellage ". It is separated from the two nature reserves by the Emsdeich. In addition, it is adjacent to the conservation area "Tuxxdorf nominal village Rhede / Brook" and part of the nature reserve "Emstal".

The area has been a nature reserve since June 14, 2008. The former 185 hectare nature reserve "Emsaltwasser bei Vellage" (NSG WE 048), which was designated as of August 2, 1968, has been dissolved in the area. Responsible lower nature conservation authorities are the districts of Emsland and Leer.

The protected area includes a portion of the reclaimed Niederung sgebietes the Ems . It is located in the foreland of the dike between the road bridge on Kreisstraße 158 near Papenburg and the weir near Herbrum . The Herbrum lock and the lock channel above the lock and part of the lock channel below the lock are excluded.

In a part of the reserve is Tide influential controlled by Verwallungen to extensive in the region between the Verwallung and the dyke grassland to enable management. The remaining part is subject to the influence of the tide.

The designation as a nature reserve serves u. a. the protection of the river habitat e.g. B. for migratory fish species, the existing oxbow lakes and other still waters, the (wet) grassland, reed beds and sedge beds as well as near-natural riparian forests .
