The Herbrum lock is the northernmost lock on the Dortmund-Ems Canal . It is located in Herbrum , a district of the city of Papenburg in the Emsland district .

description

The Herbrum lock is the link between the Dortmund-Ems Canal and the Ems estuary, which is influenced by the tides . It is operated on site at set times, but due to the silt problem in the underwater, it can only be funneled on the Ems when the water level is sufficient . It is therefore of particular importance as access to the canalised inland waterway network .

Old lock

The first lock chamber was built and put into operation in 1899 using the embankment method. It is 165 m long, 10 m wide and is closed with two lifting gates, the counterweights of which are each taken up by a striking steel portal.

New lock

The new lock chamber was built in sheet piling from 1964 to 1966 . It is 165 m long, 12 m wide and is also closed with two lifting gates in steel portals.

In October 2016 a lifting gate failed and there was a risk that the waiting ships could touch the bottom in the underwater at low tide . In cooperation with the Lower Saxony State Agency for Water Management, Coastal Protection and Nature Conservation , the Ems barrage was closed and a sufficient water level was achieved to ward off the dangerous situation.
