The Altenrheine lock is a lock on the Dortmund-Ems Canal (DEK). It is located in Altenrheine, a district of Rheine in the Steinfurt district .
General
The Altenrheine lock (DEK-km 117.9) is part of the so-called Rheine lock staircase . On this approximately 29-kilometer-long section of the canal between the Bevergern lock (DEK-km 109.3) and the Gleesen lock (DEK-km 137.9), a height difference of almost 29 meters is overcome. On the waterway from Bevergern to Gleesen three more locks have to be passed: Rodde (DEK-km 112.5), Venhaus (DEK-km 126.6) and Hesselte (DEK-km 134.5).
The Altenrheine lock is operated by the Rheine Waterways and Shipping Office . It has an average fall height of 3.6 m and is operated and monitored daily, except on public holidays, between 6 a.m. and 10 p.m. by the Bergeshövede control center .
Lock chamber
The first lock in Altenrheine was put into operation in 1899 and was supplemented by a larger tow lock in 1914. As a replacement for the old structures, a new lock chamber was built from 1971 for around 21 million German marks . It is 190 m long, 12 m wide and went into operation on August 12, 1974. Theoretically, these dimensions would allow the passage of inland vessels of class Vb , but the neighboring locks can currently only accommodate vehicles up to class IV ( European ship ).
