The Bevergern lock is a lock on the Dortmund-Ems Canal (DEK), near the Nassen Dreieck . It is named after the former town of Bevergern , which has been a district of Hörstel in the Steinfurt district since 1975 .
General
The Bevergern lock (DEK-km 109.3) is the southernmost structure of the so-called Rheine lock staircase . On this approximately 29-kilometer-long section of the canal, a height difference of almost 29 meters is overcome up to the Gleesen lock (DEK-km 137.9). On the waterway from Bevergern to Gleesen four more locks have to be passed: Rodde (DEK-km 112.5), Altenrheine (DEK-km 118.0), Venhaus (DEK-km 126.6) and Hesselte (DEK-km 134.5).
The Bevergern lock is operated by the Rheine Waterways and Shipping Office and operated and monitored daily, except on public holidays, between 6 a.m. and 10 p.m. from the Bergeshövede control center .
Lock chambers
- Small lock
The first lock (DEK-km 109.7) was built in 1898 together with the Bergeshövede lock (DEK-km 108.6). Both lock chambers are almost 67 m long, 8.60 m wide and are no longer available for shipping. In Bevergern the mean height of fall was 4.0 m, in Bergeshövede 4.1 m.
- Big lock
As early as 1916, a larger savings lock chamber was put into operation. It is 163.31 m long, 9.93 m wide and overcomes the drop height of 8.1 m with a lock passage. Due to its width, the lock is only suitable for European ships .
- New lock
The construction of a new lock chamber is expected to begin in 2021. With a usable length of 140 m and a width of 12.5 m, it will enable the passage of large motor cargo ships . Approval for shipping is planned for 2025.
