The Rodde lock is a lock on the Dortmund-Ems Canal (DEK). It is located in Rodde , a district of Rheine in northern Münsterland .
General
The Rodde lock (DEK-km 112.5) is part of the so-called Rheine lock staircase . On this approximately 29-kilometer-long section of the canal between the Bevergern lock (DEK-km 109.3) and the Gleesen lock (DEK-km 137.9), a height difference of almost 29 meters is overcome. On the waterway from Bevergern to Gleesen three more locks have to be passed: Altenrheine (DEK-km 117.9), Venhaus (DEK-km 126.6) and Hesselte (DEK-km 134.5).
The Rodde lock is operated by the Rheine Waterways and Shipping Authority. It has an average fall height of 3.8 m and is operated and monitored daily, except on public holidays, from 6:00 am to 10:00 pm by the Bergeshövede control center .
Lock chambers
- Small lock
The first lock was built in 1898. The lock chamber was around 67 m long, 8.60 m wide and was backfilled in 1999.
- Big lock
The current lock chamber was put into operation in 1914. It is around 163 m long, 10 m wide and with these dimensions is maximally suitable for European ships .
- New lock
The construction of a new lock chamber is expected to begin in 2016. With a usable length of 140 m and a width of 12.5 m, it will enable the passage of large motor cargo ships . The new lock is to be built on the canal island between the existing and already filled lock chamber. After its commissioning (probably 2020), the above-ground dismantling and backfilling of the current lock chamber will take place.
