The Varloh lock is a lock on the Dortmund-Ems Canal (DEK). It is located in Varloh, a district of Geeste in the Emsland district .

The Varloh lock (DEK-km 158.1) is operated by the Meppen Waterways and Shipping Office . It has an average fall height of 3.67 m and is operated and monitored daily, except on public holidays, from 6 a.m. to 10 p.m. from the Meppen control center.

Old lock

The first lock chamber was built from masonry in 1894 and put into operation with the completion of the Dortmund-Ems Canal in 1899. It is 165 m long, 10 m wide and is closed with two mortise gates .

New lock

In 1954, another and wider lock chamber made of sheet pile walls was built parallel to the old lock . It is 153 m long and 12 m wide. In the period from 2006 to 2007, the facility was completely renovated and brought up to the latest state of the art. The lock chamber received new sliding gates and it was set up for remote control and monitoring by the Meppen control center. Theoretically, the new lock would the passage of barges of Class Vb allow some neighboring locks in the northern section of the Dortmund-Ems canal can currently only vehicles up to Class IV ( Europe ship record).
