Geeste is a municipality located on the Ems in the central western part of the Emsland district in western Lower Saxony .

Geographical location

Geeste is located in the Emsland between Meppen in the north and Lingen in the south. Immediately southeast of the municipality is the Geeste reservoir and a little further in this direction is the Lingener Höhe .

Neighboring communities

In the northwest, the municipality of Geeste borders on the municipality of Twist , in the north on the city of Meppen , in the east on the city of Haselünne and the municipality of Lengerich . In the south to the city of Lingen and the municipality of Wietmarschen in the county of Bentheim .

history

Early history

A large number of excavations and finds provide information about the prehistory and early history of human life in the area of ​​the (present-day) Emsland. The huge stone graves from the younger Stone Age (3000 BC) as well as archaeological finds from the middle and younger Bronze Age (1400-700 BC) should be mentioned here in particular. The sites are on the dry gees east of the Ems , mainly on the Hümmling . The settlements at that time in the area of ​​today's municipality Geeste are limited to the high Geest ridge in Hesepe, Dalum and Geeste. These "pagan", ie pre-Christian settlements developed from individual farms to small associations in the form of clustered villages .

On February 1, 1971, the communities Dalum and Osterbrock were incorporated. On March 1, 1974, Bramhar, Groß Hesepe and Varloh were added.

• Hesepe : founded in Saxon times, before 700 AD; contains two stems from old age. The full-time mayor of Geeste is Helmut Höke (CDU). In the last mayoral election on May 25, 2014, he was elected with 56.7% of the votes in the first ballot. His opponent, Peter Egbers, received 43.3%. The turnout was 55.3%. Höke took up his post on November 1, 2014, replacing the previous incumbent Hans-Josef Leinweber (CDU), who was no longer a candidate.
