Life

Aloys Coppenrath came from an old Emsland family of bakers. He was the son of Aloys Coppenrath (1898–1942) and his wife Änne, geb. Grotemeyer (1899–1986), and was born on October 9, 1933, the seventh of eight children in Groß Hesepe, where he grew up. He passed his Abitur at the grammar school in Meppen . Later he joined his parents' company Coppenrath Feingebäck in Groß Hesepe and thus gained experience in the production of baked goods.

In 1974, Aloys Coppenrath and his cousin Josef Wiese (1932–2009) developed the plan to bring frozen cream cakes onto the market and thereby occupy a market niche - the business idea of such a “confectionery in the freezer” was revolutionary at the time. That was the hour of birth of the Coppenrath & Wiese pastry shop, which they founded on January 1st, 1975. For this purpose, the cousins leased the former dairy in Westerkappeln . While Coppenrath took over the commercial management, Wiese got involved in the company as a baker, confectioner and tinkerer.

Coppenrath & Wiese initially produced frozen baked goods with 35 employees. Following the success of the first product, the "Wiener plate" and developed by meadow Aufback buns , the company grew steadily. In 1986 the Westerkappeln plant was joined by the first deep-freeze high-bay warehouse in Germany in Osnabrück-Atter and in 1992 a confectionery in Mettingen. After its expansion in 2003, it replaced the Westerkappeln site. Through these expansions, the company developed into one of the most modern confectioneries in Europe and one of the most important international manufacturers of frozen baked goods.

On January 1, 2005, the Wiese family left the group of shareholders and sold their shares to the Coppenrath family. At the same time, Aloys Coppenrath and Josef Wiese, both now over 70 years old, withdrew from the operational management.

Coppenrath died on March 20, 2013 at the age of 79. He was buried on March 26, 2013 in the Heger cemetery in Osnabrück .
