history

Production site in Mettingen

Coppenrath & Wiese was founded in 1975 by cousins Aloys Coppenrath from Groß Hesepe , a merchant, and the confectioner Josef Wiese from Mettingen . The production of frozen cakes started with 35 employees in the old dairy in Westerkappeln .

In the following years, production was steadily expanded and new products were added to the range, so that in 1992 a new production facility in neighboring Mettingen started operations. A small production area initially remained in neighboring Westerkappeln, until finally, in 2003, the entire production was relocated to Mettingen and the Westerkappeln location was closed. Also in 2003, the company was accused of a food scandal in the tabloid media because an eleven-year-old girl died shortly after eating a cream cake. After subsequent state laboratory tests, however, the allegations against the company turned out to be baseless.

The freezer warehouse located in the Atter district of Osnabrück and its own shipping company handle the pan-European sales of the products. Frozen cakes and cakes have also been exported to the USA since 2005 and to Australia since 2010 .

The company sells its goods under both the manufacturer's brand Coppenrath & Wiese and the secondary brand Grotemeyer's Konditorei . It also produces goods for various private labels .

At the end of June 2014, the four shareholders unanimously decided to sell the company. In March 2015 it was announced that the company had been managed by Dr. Oetker had been taken over.
