Neighboring municipalities are Thuine , Baccum and Langen in the north, Freren in the east, Beesten in the south and Lingen and Lünne in the west .

origin of the name

The name of the place appears as Masinge in the Corveyer Heberegister. The origin of the name is not entirely certain. According to Jellinghaus, a proper name with the meaning of Masinge Forest seems to be behind it. The basic word -ingen stands for a place name ending of Germanic origin; This goes back to a settling clan or in general to settlement.

history

In the records of the Werden Abbey , Messingen is mentioned for the first time as early as 835 as a place belonging to Venkigau . The tribute seems to have changed from Werden to Corvey. In a document of the Corvey monastery from 836 - 891 it is reported that Garward and Erb donated part of the Messinger Forest to Corvey, which was testified by Hohrid, Aldmer, Ragenwig, Pumi, Bernold and Ardwich . Ziozo and Baessi annually supplied six measures of honey and a sheep, Gerold eight bushels of barley, two sheep and one and a half jars of honey.

Messingen belonged to the County of Tecklenburg in the Middle Ages . After the defeat of the Tecklenburg Counts in the Schmalkaldic War , Beesten became part of the County of Lingen in 1548 .

The Thirty Years' War also left its mark on Messingen. So in 1623 came the Mansfelder and shortly afterwards the imperial ones. They robbed and ravaged the land and the church.

In 1806 Messingen was parish off from Thuine and raised to its own parish.

Church of St. Anthony

There was an Antonius chapel in Messingen as early as 1295. The inhabitants of Messigen went to the parish church of Thuine on Sundays and festive days, for baptisms, first communions, marriages and funerals . In 1806 a separate parish was formed in Messingen.

On August 7th, 1862 the foundation stone was laid for today's St. Antonius Church. The old chapel had not only become too small, it was also dilapidated in some places. Only the tower could be preserved from the old chapel and integrated into the new building. The solemn consecration took place on November 30, 1863, but almost five years passed before it was finally completed on July 29, 1868. In 1868 the church got the first organ; the current organ dates from 1959. Between 1991 and 1993 extensive renovation work was carried out on the outside and inside of the church.
