history

The treasure trove of Lengerich (in the district Sudderwehe), consisting of Roman gold and silver coins as well as golden jewelry, is evidence of early settlement .

After the year 800 a half-timbered chapel was built on the site of today's market square. It was replaced around 1000 by a Romanesque stone church. Lengerich is first mentioned in a document in 890 AD as "Lengirichi", later as "Lengreke".

A fortified church was built around 1150 . It had a curtain wall, fortified gates and stone granaries. The lower part of the tower of today's Evangelical Reformed Church served the Lengerich people as a place of refuge.

Lengerich belonged to the county of Tecklenburg in the Middle Ages . After the defeat of the Tecklenburg Counts in the Schmalkaldic War , Lengerich became part of the County of Lingen in 1548 . A school in Lengerich is documented in 1550. In 1702 King Friedrich I inherited the County of Lingen, and Lengerich became Prussian . In 1807 Lengerich was occupied by Napoleon's French troops. During the French occupation, Lengerich belonged to the Ems department (from 1811 Département de l'Ems-Supérieur ). After the Congress of Vienna , Lengerich came to the Kingdom of Hanover in 1815 .
