Hermann Jellinghaus

Hermann Jellinghaus (born January 28, 1847 in Wallenbrück (today Spenge ), † December 15, 1929 in Osnabrück ) was a German linguist and folklorist .

Life

Hermann Jellinghaus was born as the son of Pastor Karl Jellinghaus and his wife Friederike, geb. Schlueter, born. After attending grammar school in Bielefeld, Jellinghaus studied in Göttingen from 1866 to 1867 , then in Halle and from 1868 to 1870 in Berlin . In 1871 he took part in the war against France , then in the same year he was able to take his teaching examination in Göttingen. In 1872/1873 he was a secondary school teacher in Altena in the Sauerland and then a secondary school teacher in Kiel. In 1877 he received his doctorate as Dr. phil., from 1883 he was rector of the secondary school in Bad Segeberg in Schleswig-Holstein.

Jellinghaus is considered to be the old master of Low German language research and folklore. His most important work was in the field of place name research . He published the third edition of the second part (geographical names) of the old German name book founded by Ernst Förstemann .

His grave is on the Johannisfriedhof (Osnabrück) .
