Neighboring communities

history
The first written mention of the original small peasantry Lehe goes back to the year 1400. The serf Herman Griep and Coip van Hede (also called Oltmanns) appeared on January 22nd of the same year before the Aschendorfer court. Griep bought himself free and was thus released from bondage by van Hede . This ransom was notarized by the judge Sweder Rorynck. The Lehe farmers were also mentioned for the first time in this document.
The name of the lehe can be traced back to the Gothic word “Hlew” (German for “protection”), as the peasantry was built in a place protecting against storms and floods. The Heerweg (later Chausseestrasse) was a trade route in the direction of Aschendorf and Dörpen. Today's federal highway 70 runs at this point .
In 1902 there was a growing desire for a church of their own, which was finally completed in 1914 despite initial skepticism. 16 years later the Catholic elementary school Lehe was built next to the new Church of the Sacred Heart of Jesus .
In the Second World War , Lehe was almost completely destroyed. After the bridge over the coastal canal was blown up by German troops in April 1945, the Allies only succeeded in crossing troops from Poland, Canada and England after a long break and with the help of pontoons . The armored troops advancing in three platoons took revenge for the forced stop and destroyed the village. The residents were previously able to flee to the surrounding villages of Neulehe and Ahlen.
Until the Lower Saxon community reform , which came into force on January 1, 1973, Lehe was part of the Aschendorf community . Lehe has been a member of the village renewal program since 1996 . In 2000 the community celebrated its 600th anniversary.
Population development
The number of inhabitants in the municipality has increased only very slowly over the centuries. While it was 182 in 1652, it only increased to 1,047 by 2010.
