VfL Handrup
The association for physical exercises Handrup was founded on September 20, 1958 exclusively by clergymen, teachers and students of the Sacred Heart Monastery in Handrup. In the beginning, athletics , fistball and ring tennis were practiced. From 1967 volleyball was also played. The volleyball team of VfL Handrup was the first team in what was then the district of Lingen to take part in point games. Later the sports gymnastics, table tennis, swimming and judo were added. In judo, several Lower Saxony and North German championships were won in the 1970s.
From 1973 to 1976 a youth team took part in the game of points in football, but remained unsuccessful, so that football was left to SV Lengerich-Handrup. Towards the end of the 1970s, the association's activities were forced to slow down because the number of boarding school students was steadily decreasing. At that time, residents of the surrounding communities could also join the association. Since there were hardly any students in the boarding school recently, the sports activities in the club fell asleep completely. However, the club remained.
After consultation with the then chairman of the association, VfL Handrup was taken over by the monastery community. At the first general assembly on March 4, 1988, a new statute was passed by the members and a new board was elected. The club was now independent and began to build a tennis department.
Today tennis is the main division of VfL. In addition to tennis, the club still runs a wind orchestra , women's gymnastics , volleyball and jazz dance department.
