Henrike Handrup (born March 9, 1983 in Wuppertal ) is a former German cyclist who competed in paracycling class B races for the visually impaired .

Athletic career

Henrike Handrup is blind from birth. Despite her visual impairment, she practices a variety of sports including skiing , skydiving , gymnastics, and rowing . When she was studying psychology at the University of Wuppertal , she met the successful handbiker Andrea Eskau , who encouraged her to get involved in cycling.

Since Handrup could not find a suitable club in Wuppertal, she then commuted to Freiburg im Breisgau to train there with a sighted pilot . In 2007, the then national coach Adelbert Kromer suggested the cyclist Ellen Heiny as a tandem partner . In 2009, the two athletes became vice world champions in road races and won bronze in the world championship in the 1000 meter time trial . In 2012 they competed in four disciplines at the Summer Paralympics in London , but could not place in the top ranks. The duo later trained with the Olympic track champion Udo Hempel on the cycling track in Kaarst-Büttgen . In the meantime, Handrup had to take a break in competitive sports due to an illness and finally ended her career.

Professional

Henrike Handrup is a trained psychotherapist . Until 2013 she worked for the Federal Center for Health Education and worked, among other things, on the campaign “Make children strong” for addiction prevention. Since then she has been working at the Helios University Hospital in Wuppertal (as of 2017).
