About this picture

Rastdorf is a municipality and a member municipality of the integrated municipality Werlte in the northeast of the Emsland district in western Lower Saxony ( Germany ).

The municipality, which extends over an area of around 26.33 km², has 1000 inhabitants .

geography

location

Rastdorf is located in the northeastern part of the Geest landscape of the Hümmling in the Emsland . The nearest town, about 16 km north is Friesoythe , 24 km east is Cloppenburg , 28 km northwest Papenburg , 31 km south Haselünne and 37 km southwest the district town Meppen . The highest point near Rastdorf is the Queckenberg at 35 m. NN.

Townscape

Due to the history of its origins, the settlement structure of the place differs greatly from the other villages in the area. While the Hümmling is otherwise characterized by clustered villages with recognizable outskirts, Rastdorf has the character of a street village with long, straight access roads, as they usually occur in the Emsland west of the Ems and in East Friesland, but without the canals that are typical there.

Neighboring communities

Neighboring communities in the north are the community of Hilkenbrook in the combined community of Nordhümmling , in the east the town of Friesoythe in the district of Cloppenburg and the community of Vrees , in the south the community Werlte , in the southeast an Bockholte and in the west the communities Spahnharrenstätte and Lorup .

history

The community goes back to the "Colony Rastdorf", which was founded in 1833 and initially consisted of three houses.

At the beginning of the 1940s, the Krupp shooting range in Meppen was expanded, so it was necessary to give up some settlement areas. Their residents were forcibly relocated. Among other things, the entire village of Wahn was razed to the ground. Many of the displaced from Wahn were resettled in Rastdorf. Residents were also expelled from other locations that did not have to give way completely to the shooting range and settled in Rastdorf. These came from Emmeln , Tinnen , Sprakel (a property west-southwest of Sögel) and Apeldorn .

In 1941, most of the resettlement was complete. This year is generally regarded as the year the village of Rastdorf was founded. On November 1, 1943, Rastdorf received its own local law by law and became an independent municipality. Rastdorf has belonged to the municipality of Werlte since the municipality reform in Lower Saxony that came into force on January 1, 1973 in the old district of Aschendorf-Hümmling .

politics

Municipal council

The municipal council has 11 elected members. As a result of the local elections on September 11, 2011, it includes three parties.

The 2016 local elections did not result in any change in the distribution of seats.

coat of arms

Coat of arms, Rastdorf

The coat of arms of the municipality of Rastdorf describes the origin of the settlers who have come together to form a new municipality; However, it also illustrates the courage and will to succeed in their new home.

The eight ears of wheat, tied together in a sheaf, indicate the eight communities from which the first settlers came to Rastdorf. Just as the ears of wheat were tied into a sheaf, these settlers form a new community. At the same time, the ears of corn stand for success in their new home. The stone monument in the lower part of the coat of arms is modeled on the Rastdorfer Heimatstein, which was erected in memory of the Rastdorf colony and the formation of the new community. The colors red and gold express the bond with the other four member communities of the Samtgemeinde Werlte, whose coat of arms also features these colors.
