The joint municipality of Nordhümmling is a joint municipality in the Emsland district in Lower Saxony . It was founded in 1973 as part of the administrative and territorial reform. The seat of the joint municipality is Esterwegen .

Geographical location
The combined community of Nordhümmling is located in the northeast of the district and extends over an area of 142.63 km².
Neighboring communities
The joint municipality borders in the north on the municipalities of Rhauderfehn and Ostrhauderfehn in the district of Leer , in the east on the municipality Saterland and the city of Friesoythe in the district of Cloppenburg , in the south on the joint municipality Werlte and the joint municipality Sögel , in the west on the joint municipality Dörpen and in the northwest the city of Papenburg .

Joint council
The council of the combined municipality of Nordhümmling consists of 28 council women and councilors. This is the specified number for a municipality with a population between 11,001 and 12,000. The council members are elected for a five-year term by local elections. The current term of office began on November 1, 2016 and ends on October 31, 2021.
The full-time mayor of the joint municipality is also entitled to vote in the council of the joint municipality.
The last local election on September 11, 2016 resulted in the following:

Joint mayor of the municipality
The full-time mayor of the entire municipality was Stefan Eichhorn (independent). In the last mayoral election on May 25, 2014, he was elected with 67.8% of the vote. His opponent Lukas Wübbolt (CDU) received 32.2%. The turnout was 49.6%. Eichhorn took office on November 1, 2014, replacing the previous incumbent Hermann Tebben. He passed away in April 2018.
On September 23, 2018, Christoph Hüntelmann (independent) was elected as the new mayor of the municipality with 63.8% yes-votes.
Representatives in the Land and Bundestag
The integrated municipality is part of the Papenburg state electoral district . In addition to the city of Papenburg, it also includes the communities Rhede (Ems) and the combined communities Dörpen , Lathen , Nordhümmling, Sögel and Werlte . Five direct candidates ran for the state elections in Lower Saxony in 2013 . The directly elected MP is Bernd Busemann ( CDU ). The constituency had constituency number 82.
Nordhümmling belongs to the Bundestag constituency Unterems (constituency 25), which consists of the district of Leer and the northern part of the district of Emsland. The constituency was redesigned for the 1980 federal election and has remained unchanged since then. So far, only representatives of the CDU have prevailed as direct candidates in this constituency. The constituency is represented in the Bundestag by the directly elected CDU MP Gitta Connemann from Leer. No party candidate from the constituency entered the Bundestag via the parties' list.

Culture and sights
The member communities of the integrated community are particularly suitable for cycling and hiking. Esterwegen and Surwold are "state-approved resorts ".
Esterwegen is particularly known for its youth campsite on Erikasee, which is a meeting point for teenagers and young adults.
In Surwold there is a 34 hectare recreational area, "Surwold's Forest".
