The Sögel municipality is a community association in Emsland, Lower Saxony . It was created in 1974 through the amalgamation of numerous smaller towns. Before 1932, Sögel was the seat of the district of Hümmling and in the 18th century an even larger administrative area, as the river name Sagter Ems (from "Sögeler Ems") shows.

In terms of area, Sögel is the largest municipality in the Emsland, with around 16,144 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2015).

The Sögel municipality covers most of the Hümmling Geest landscape . The Ems runs fifteen kilometers west of the town center and the Hase 16 km south .

The Samtgemeinde borders in the north on the Samtgemeinde Nordhümmling , in the east on the Samtgemeinde Werlte , in the south on the Samtgemeinde Herzlake and the cities Haselünne and Meppen and in the west on the city Haren and the Samtgemeinden Lathen and Dörpen .

Joint council

The joint municipality council elected in 2016 has 33 elected members, as well as the directly elected joint municipality mayor. Since the local elections on September 11, 2011, three parties or voter communities have belonged to it.

Joint mayor of the municipality

In the election as full-time mayor of the municipality on September 10, 2006, Günter Wigbers (CDU) was elected with 77.8% of the votes. In the last mayoral election on May 25, 2014, he was re-elected with 53.67% of the vote. His opponent Frank Klaß (non-party) received 46.3%. The turnout was 56.2%. Wigbers began his further term on November 1, 2014.

The integrated municipality is part of the Papenburg state electoral district . In addition to the city of Papenburg, it also includes the communities Rhede (Ems) and the combined communities Dörpen , Lathen , Nordhümmling , Sögel and Werlte . Five direct candidates ran for the state elections in Lower Saxony in 2013 . The directly elected MP is Bernd Busemann ( CDU ). The constituency had constituency number 82.

Sögel belongs to the Bundestag constituency Unterems (constituency 25), which consists of the district of Leer and the northern part of the district of Emsland. The constituency was redesigned for the 1980 federal election and has remained unchanged since then. So far, only representatives of the CDU have prevailed as direct candidates in this constituency. The constituency is represented in the Bundestag by the directly elected CDU MP Gitta Connemann from Leer. No party candidate from the constituency entered the Bundestag via the parties' list.
