Buildings

Old Rheder Church

The Alte Rheder Church is a late Gothic brick building of three cross vaulted bays with a 5/8 choir and a rectangular west tower. Parts of the tower base date from the 13th century. The main part of the church building dates from around 1470. The parish of St. Nicholas used the church as a parish church until 1913 . Then the church became too small for the growing community and a new church was built in the town center. The profaned church now serves as a memorial church , a memorial for the dead of the world wars and a venue for cultural music events such as the music series “Church Music in Emsland”.

The Catholic parish church of St. Nikolaus was built in 1913 as a new building in the center of the village after the old parish church with its 565 seats turned out to be too small. The church, built by master builder Wilhelm Sunder-Plassmann from Münster in the neo-Romanesque style , received two large square west towers and a mighty octagonal crossing tower , which earned the church the nickname "Rheder Cathedral" among the locals. A first major interior renovation took place in the course of the changes in connection with the Second Vatican Council in 1966. Another interior renovation took place in 1999, in which the original character of the church was brought back to the fore. Many paintings and the sandstone pillars have been restored. In 2013, the 100-year history was celebrated with an anniversary weekend.
