Community structure

The community of Surwold consists of the two districts

  • Börgerwald
  • Börgermoor

Börgerwald

The borgerwald district to the south with approx. 1,800 inhabitants lies on the northern edge of the hilly and wooded Hümmlings, 5–42 meters above sea level . The use of the landscape is shaped by agriculture. The " serpentine " of the L51 in the area of the primary school is remarkable , here a height difference of around 15 m is overcome, the gradient of the road is around 8%. The most famous mountain range in the area is the Wattberg with a height of 34 meters above sea level.

The Papenburg am Steinberg air sports club is at home at the glider airfield in Börgerwald.

Börgermoor

The northern district of Börgermoor borders the city of Papenburg and has a swimming and fishing lake and roads suitable for inline skating , which are also suitable for cycling with smaller children due to the low traffic volume. Well known is the youth welfare service in Johannesburg , which has existed since 1914.

history

The "Börger Wald" settlement was founded in 1879 . In 1934 , both places, until then part of the political municipality of Börger , were merged into an independent municipality. The new community was named after the Friesian king Suirboldus, who, according to legend, was an ally of the Saxon Duke Widukind. According to tradition, both were opponents of Charlemagne.

During the Nazi era, the Börgermoor concentration camp , one of the Emsland camps, was located near Börgermoor . It became known through the song of the moor soldiers .

The Johannesburg in Börgermoor should also be mentioned, where around 300 employees accompany over 600 young people and young adults from elementary school to journeyman exams in over 37 professions. The Johannesburg also offers housing options for the young people.

Infrastructure

In both districts there is a Catholic church (St. John the Baptist in Börgermoor and St. Josef in Börgerwald), in Börgermoor there is a Protestant chapel (Zur Gnade Christi) from 1965, which was rededicated in October 2017. Surwold has two kindergartens, two elementary schools, a secondary school and a secondary school. Doctors, dentists and pharmacies are on site. There is a supermarket in Börgerwald and a discounter in Börgermoor. There are bakeries, car workshops and petrol stations in both districts. All important craft businesses are on site, as are banks with ATMs.

The district of Börgermoor is separated by the coastal canal that runs from east to west. There is an inland port for cargo handling and a marina with its own boat club.

A multitude of options for recreational activities can be found in the Börgerwald district: it has the "Surwolds Wald" leisure facility, which includes a climbing parkour, a summer toboggan run and a mini golf course.
