history

Incorporations

In 1965 the municipalities of Altenlünne and Plantlünne merged to form the municipality of Lünne.

On March 1, 1974, part of the neighboring municipality of Beesten , which had around 100 inhabitants at that time, and the municipality of Heitel were incorporated into the municipality of Lünne.

Derivation of the names and history of the districts

The municipality of Lünne was only created in 1965 from the merger of the former municipalities of Altenlünne, Plantlünne with Heitel and Blankemate. This area must have been relatively heavily populated in pre-Christian times, as numerous Stone Age finds show.

Altenlünne (old: Lunni ) is mentioned around 890 in the Werdener Urbar , later also in the Corveyer Heberegister and Schapener directory. Luidwig and Menni delivered to Werden, Unno, Lanzo and Gerwigus had to pay taxes to the church and the Oberhof in Schapen. According to an old oral tradition, the missionary Liudger is said to have come across the Aa from the farmer Böker near a pagan sacrificial site, preached the Gospel and built a church in Altenlünne. The first church until 1420 stood on a square east of Speermann, on the old Altenlünne-Beestener Weg, which was called Totenkamp, which is synonymous with cemetery. Lunne (old north. Hlunne = role) referred to old Saxon. a place on the river (here over the strongly flowing Aa), at which loads could be brought across the river by means of wood placed underneath (see also Haselünne ). In later times, an addition was used to differentiate between the various lunars. The place has been called Altenlünne since the 13th century.

Lünner crib

Plantlünne is named as a parish in 1276 and is said to have branched off from Altenlünne. The determinant is unsecured. According to L. Schriever, the derivation of the Low German planten = plant (new found) is obvious. On the hill where the church stands today, an old tower (defense tower or tithe tower) is said to have stood, on which the first church for Altenlünne and Plantlünne was jointly built in 1420. Pastor Caspar Ludwig Schriever (1832–1905) should be mentioned among the clergy who presided over this parish , who made a special contribution to the artistic design of the church. Among other things, he procured the Lünner crib from Heinrich Weltring .

The military airfield Plantlünne / Wesel with the III./Jagdgeschwader 26 was located near Plantlünne. At the beginning of the Second World War the airfield, on which 60 to 120 aircraft were, was operational. The airport was built by prisoners. They moved in long columns, guarded by guards, from the military airfield Plantlünne / Wesel to the Dortmund-Ems canal , where they were using shovels and bare hands to load shiploads of building materials and paving material for the expansion of the airport onto light rail trucks or trucks. After several bombings, the British took possession of the airfield on April 9, 1945 and flew British missions from there. A tragic mistake began here on May 3, 1945. British fighter planes rose and sank the Cap Arcona and Thielbek in the Bay of Lübeck , on which numerous concentration camp prisoners from the Neuengamme concentration camp were.

Heitel (old: Hatiloha 890, Hetiloha, Hethlo, Hedela 1000) is also mentioned in the Werden levy register as early as 890. The origin of the name is uncertain. According to H. Abels, the name could stand for a wood streaked with heather. Heitel has been devastated several times by the effects of war, first by Normans (Vikings) at the end of the 9th century . This led twice to the entry "wüstetzt" in the register of records in Werden. In the 10th century, benefits in kind took the place of earlier cash payments.

Blankemate , farmers between Beesten and Lünne. Derivation of the name unknown.

The municipality's coat of arms is divided vertically into a wave shape. The non-heraldic left part shows a sheaf of wheat with four golden ears on a blue background. The other side of the coat of arms shows a blue spinning wheel on a gold background.

Culture and sights

Connected to the settlement is a recreation area with a holiday home complex and a campsite. Both are located on a 5000 m² groundwater lake, which was formerly used as a clay mining area in the 19th century. The parish has both an Evangelical Reformed and a Catholic church, as well as a youth home called " Oscar Romero House". The Mühlenkolk in Plantlünne and the bakery in Heitel are worth seeing.

St. Vitus Church

According to ancient traditions, St. Liudger , first bishop of Münster, is said to have preached in Lünne at the beginning of the 9th century. The Altenlünner field name "Dodenkamp" (Totenkamp) is reminiscent of an old place where the first wooden church presumably stood .

Today's Catholic St. Vitus Church dates back to 1523. In 1975 the church was greatly expanded with additions to the side aisles, and since then 450 seats have been available. The direct juxtaposition of old walls and new building fabric gives the church an unusual appearance.
