Gitta Connemann (born Saathoff , born May 10, 1964 in Leer in East Frisia ) is a German politician ( CDU ) and lawyer . She has been a member of the Bundestag since 2002 . Gitta Connemann was born on May 10, 1964 in Leer as the daughter of the farmer Andreas Folkmar Saathoff (1932–2010) and Hilje, née Buiskool (* 1933). Her mother comes from the Dutch town of Woldendorp . She has two younger brothers and grew up in Holtland . After graduating from high school in 1983 at the Teletta-Groß-Gymnasium Leer , Connemann first did an apprenticeship as a saleswoman in a shoe store in Leer and then studied law at the University of Osnabrück and the Johannes Gutenberg University in Mainz from 1984 , which she completed with the first in 1990 finished his legal state examination . After her legal clerkship , she passed the second state examination in 1993 and then worked as a lawyer in Darmstadt and Leer. In 1995 she also worked as in-house counsel at the employers' association for agriculture and cooperatives in Weser-Ems.

In 1996 she joined the CDU and was elected to the council of the Hesel community , to which she belonged until 1999. Since 2001 she has been a member of the district council of the district of Leer .

Connemann has been a member of the German Bundestag for the Unterems constituency since 2002 . She succeeded Rudolf Seiters . From 2003 to 2007 she was chairwoman of the “Culture in Germany” commission of inquiry . She is the deputy chairwoman of the German- Israeli parliamentary group and is a member of the board of the SME parliamentary group of the CDU / CSU parliamentary group.

In 2009, Connemann commissioned the Bundestag's Scientific Service to clarify whether extraterrestrial life existed. The report is now publicly available after a legal dispute. In 2011 she was one of five members of the CDU / CSU parliamentary group that did not approve the nuclear phase-out bill. In mid-2014 she was one of five members of the Bundestag who voted against the introduction of the statutory minimum wage.

Connemann has always entered the Bundestag as a directly elected member of the Unterems constituency . In the 2005 Bundestag election it received 47.1% of the first votes , and in the 2009 Bundestag election 45.2% of the first votes. She was able to significantly improve her result in the following federal election in 2013 with 54.7% of the first votes. In 2017 she achieved 13th place of the best first vote results with 50.0% of the first votes.

Until 2015 she was a full member of the Bundestag Committee on Food and Agriculture and its chairman.

In 2014, the DGB -Regionalverband Ostfriesland-Nördliches Emsland invited her to speak at an event on the occasion of Anti-War Day at the Esterwegen memorial . In an interview earlier, she had shown understanding for the actions of the Israeli military in the 2014 Gaza conflict .

As deputy chairman of the CDU / CSU parliamentary group, she is responsible for the issues of agriculture and nutrition, churches and petitions. Connemann is a full member of the Joint Committee and a deputy member of the Committee on Food and Agriculture , as well as the Committee on Culture and the Media .

On December 15, 2016, Connemann received the Cross of Merit on Ribbon of the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany for her special services to the common good , which was presented to her by the President of the Bundestag Norbert Lammert .

She is one of the 75 Union MPs - 68 from the CDU (26.9% of all CDU MPs) and 7 from the CSU (12.5% ​​of all CSU MPs) - who voted for same-sex marriage in July 2017 .

Connemann regularly organizes events in its constituency area under the name “Das Schwarze Sofa”. For example, she had Julia Klöckner and Wolfgang Bosbach (both also members of the CDU) as guests.

At the beginning of 2018 Connemann was a member of the exploratory group of the CDU to re-form a grand coalition between the Union and the SPD.

On December 11, 2021, Gitta Connemann was elected federal chairman of the SME and Economic Union in the second ballot with 59 percent of the delegate's votes at the digitally organized Federal SME Conference.
