Ostfriesland

In a broader sense, East Frisians are the inhabitants of East Frisia in the north-west of Lower Saxony . In a narrower sense, the East Frisians represent the eastern branch of the Frisian ethnic group and thus belong to the recognized minorities in Germany alongside the Danes , Sorbs , Sinti and Roma .

Usually only people call themselves East Frisians who come from the historic county of East Frisia in northwest Germany. In general, all Frisians from the eastern Frisian areas (East Frisians, Sater Frisians, Oldenburg Frisians, Rüstringer Frisians, Wurt Frisians etc.) are grouped together under the name Ostfriesen (or East Frisians ). The Federal Ministry of the Interior only differentiates between East Frisians and Sater Frisians . Although the latter are descended from East Frisians, their cultural and linguistic development was significantly different due to the geographical and confessional separation. Furthermore, the East Frisians are related to the North Frisians , who probably also descended from emigrated East Frisians, and the Westlauwers'schen Frisians .

Exact figures on the size of the East Frisian part of the Frisian ethnic group are not available, as the commitment to an ethnic group or minority is not officially queried. In contrast to the North and West Frisians, the East Frisians lost their Frisian language very early on. The popular language today is the East Frisian Platt . In Friesenrat they are in the east section represented. As a municipal association, the East Frisian landscape also represents the interests of the East Frisians.
