West Frisians
The West Frisians (more precisely: Westlauwers'sche Friesen ) are the Frisians in the part of the Frisian settlement area administered by the Netherlands . This area, the province of Friesland , is bounded by the IJsselmeer to the west and the Lauwers to the east. In Germany it is often incorrectly called West Frisia , analogous to East Frisia , hence the imprecise name West Frisian . In the Netherlands, on the other hand, the name “West Friezen” clearly refers to the inhabitants of the West Friesland region and not the Westlauwers' Friesians.
The Westerlauwers-Frisians are related to the North Frisians and the Eastern Frisians ( Ostfriesen , Saterfriesen etc.). While the East Frisians lost the Frisian language in the later Middle Ages, of the approximately 660,000 Frisians in the Netherlands, more than 400,000 still speak West Frisian .
