history

The name Emmeln is first mentioned in 1160 with the name "Eimblen". A story tells that three brothers from Friesland settled here on the Ems (today Fehren, Vahlhaus and Wolbers, all farms in the "Bauernschaft" district). Until the end of the 1970s, Emmeln was mainly characterized by agriculture . With the construction of the Hanoverian Westbahn, the railway line from Münster to Emden, a railway station was also set up in Emmeln, which was initially referred to as "Station Kellerberg" and later as "Haren (Ems) station". Commercial operations developed in the vicinity of the railway facilities. There is a church-sponsored kindergarten and a primary school (Josefschule) on site. In the years after the Franco-German War of 1870/1871, a prison camp for French prisoners of war was set up in Emmeln . Since the statutory municipal reform in Lower Saxony, which came into force on March 1, 1974, the formerly independent municipality of Emmeln has been part of the new unified municipality of Haren (Ems). From 1959 to 2004 there was the Max Schittek GmbH & Co. KG company in Emmeln, which specialized in building construction and hydraulic engineering; it was acquired by Knoll GmbH & Co. KG in 1975 and modernized and integrated in 2004. The company Emsland Frischgeflügel was founded in 2003 and developed from the chicken marketing of the Rothkötter Group, which had existed since the end of the 1980s , and which set up the slaughtering and cutting plant in the industrial area at the Eurohafen. In 2007 the company was expanded to include a second line and today has a capacity of 185,000 t of chicken meat per year. At the beginning of 2011, Enercon announced that a new rotor blade factory would be commissioned in the Eurohafen industrial area in 2012 . The Eintracht Emmeln sports club has existed since 1961, offering various types of sport and focusing above all on youth football.
