Location of Erika in Lower Saxony

Erika is a village about 5 km from the Dutch border. It belongs to the town of Haren (Ems) and is about eight kilometers from the city center. At the beginning of 2011 the place had 1,761 inhabitants.

history

The name Erika refers to the heather of the same name . The village emerged in 1886 from the bog colony established between 1870 and 1878 for the construction of the Haren-Rütenbrock Canal , a section of the Left Ems canal network . Erika belonged to the municipality of Altharen, which was incorporated into the town of Haren (Ems) in 1956. An earlier name for the place Erika was the name Altharener Moor.

Erika was the scene of one of the biggest child abuse scandals of the 1990s. From 1987 to 1995 the priest of the community abused people under protection on several occasions.

Haren-Rütenbrocker Canal

The Haren-Rütenbrocker Canal is about 13.5 km long. It goes from the Ems to the Dutch border. He is accompanied by an avenue of English oak that was planted during the construction period. Most of its structures and the avenue are listed as historical monuments. Four locks and 12 bridges have to be passed on a boat tour to the Netherlands.

The canal was created as a section of the 111 km long left Emsian canal network in the course of the colonization of the Bourtanger Moor. It has a water depth of 1.80 m and a bottom width of 8.50 m. For a long time the bog colonies remained without an adequate economic base. They were used to ship the peat and as base stations for the drainage work on the bog.

Today the Haren-Rütenbrocker Canal, the only canal connection between Germany and the Netherlands, or between Dollart and the Rhine , can only be used for pleasure craft.
