Haren-Rütenbrock Canal

The Haren-Rütenbrock Canal (HRK) is a 13.5 km long canal that runs between Haren (Ems) via Rütenbrock in Emsland in Lower Saxony and Ter Apel . Along with the Ems Canal , which flows into the Dollart at Delfzijl, it is the only navigable connection between Germany and the Netherlands north of the Rhine.

It connects the Dutch Ter Apel-Kanaal , which runs directly behind the German-Dutch border in a north-south direction, with the Ems near Haren . The south-north canal branches off at Rütenbrock . Bundesstraße 408 runs parallel to its south bank .
History and description
The canal was built between 1870 and 1878 as part of the left-Emsian canal network with a water depth of 1.80 m and a bottom width of 8.50 m. In addition to transporting goods for ships with a load capacity of 200 tons, the canal also served to drain the moors. Today, the canal is the only currently navigable canal connection from Germany to the Netherlands between the Dollart and the Rhine that can be used for recreational shipping. Along the canal there are 100-year-old avenues made of English oak that were planted during the construction period. The entire canal with most of the buildings and avenues is a listed building.
Four locks and ten movable bridges (four swing and six bascule bridges ) have to be passed on the canal section; these are remotely controlled from a control center on lock I in Haren (Ems).
Since July 21, 2016, the new ordinance of the NLWKN (Lower Saxony State Agency for Water Management, Coastal and Nature Conservation) applies to shipping on the Haren-Rütenbrock Canal, which regulates the traffic on this waterway between Lock I in Haren and the Dutch border at Rüttenbrock . The most important innovation for boaters: Even without a driver's license, chartered watercraft that are no longer than 15 meters and transport no more than twelve people, including the driver, can be steered over the canal.
