The catchment area of the grammar school encompasses several districts.

history

In 1883 the priests of the Sacred Heart of Jesus founded a mission school in the Netherlands , which was soon also attended by German students. In 1912 the first German branch of the Sacred Heart Priests was established in Krefeld . From there a monastery was founded in Handrup . On May 22, 1923, the " Humanistic College of the Mission House Handrup " with boarding school was opened here. At first there was no upper level, the students switched to other grammar schools or to the order's own German school in Holland. The school initially served primarily to train the next generation of the Order. The boarding school costs were often paid in kind by rural families .

During the Nazi era , the school was under close scrutiny. The pupils were forbidden from leaving for Holland so that they could not continue their education. The order was u. a. defamed by foreign exchange processes . The school was closed on April 1, 1939 by government decree. When the school was closed, the order relocated part of the theology studies of its offspring from Freiburg im Breisgau to Handrup in order not to leave the buildings empty. In 1941 the monastery was expropriated. A National Socialist teacher training institute was set up in the school. A squadron of a hunting association was quartered in the attic. During the last days of the war the building was badly damaged by a bomb attack.

In 1946, classes were resumed with the permission of the British Military Government . In the 1960s and 1970s the number of students increased; the proportion of external students grew significantly. It was not until after the war that the school switched from the Dutch system of grading, reference dates and the distribution of hours to the system common in Germany. From 1956, the school achieved state recognition and expanded into a full grammar school.

In 1964 the school was renamed "Gymnasium Leoninum" in memory of the founder of the Sacred Heart Priests, Father Leo Dehon . After the Second Vatican Council, the grammar school opened up from a pure junior school to a free Catholic school. Today, according to the school, the focus is no longer on the formation of priests, but on the Christian upbringing of young people and imparting basic values. In 1971 co-education was introduced at the school . Since then, more and more Protestant children have been registered. In 1998/99 the boarding school had to be closed due to declining occupancy.

In spring 2010, several former students of the Leoninum turned to the public and reported that there had been mental and physical abuse of students by fathers in the boarding school in the 1960s and 70s. The school administration agreed to investigate all allegations and set up a website to collect information on the allegations. A former student who claims to have been in therapeutic treatment for years as a result of this abuse has filed a complaint against the school. The incidents known to date are all believed to have occurred more than 30 years ago; nothing is known of more recent cases.
