The Gleesen lock is a lock on the Dortmund-Ems Canal (DEK). It is located in the district of Gleesen in the municipality of Emsbüren , in the south of the district of Emsland .

General

The Gleesen lock (DEK-km 137.9) is the northernmost structure of the so-called Rheine lock staircase . On this approximately 29-kilometer-long section of the canal, an altitude difference of almost 29 meters is overcome up to the Bevergern lock (DEK-km 109.3). There are four more locks between Gleesen and Bevergern: Hesselte (DEK-km 134.5), Venhaus (DEK-km 126.6), Altenrheine (DEK-km 118.0) and Rodde (DEK-km 112.5).

The Gleesen lock is operated by the Rheine Waterways and Shipping Office . It has an average fall height of 6.37 m and is operated and monitored daily, except on public holidays, from 6:00 am to 10:00 pm by the Bergeshövede control center .

Lock chambers

Small lock

The first lock was built in 1898. The lock chamber is 65.93 m long, 8.60 m wide and designed as an economy lock with four economy basins. It is no longer in operation and has been recognized as a monument since 2002 .

Big lock

Another lock chamber was put into operation as early as 1914. It is 162.03 m long and 9.93 m wide and with these dimensions is maximally suitable for European ships .

New lock

At the beginning of 2016, the Ahaus branch of Johann Bunte Bauunternehmung received its first order to build a new lock chamber. With a usable length of 135 m and a width of 12.5 m, it will enable the passage of large motor cargo ships . The new lock will be built between the two old chambers so that the large lock can also be operated safely during construction. The first groundbreaking for the new building took place on August 23, 2016. In October 2019, the excavation of the actual construction pit for the new lock chamber began. After their completion, the old structures will be converted and partially demolished.
