description
The Hilter lock (DEK-km 185.9) is operated by the Meppen Waterways and Shipping Office . It has an average fall height of 1.5 m and is operated and monitored daily, except on public holidays, from 6 a.m. to 10 p.m. from the Meppen control center.
- Old lock
The first lock chamber was built in 1896 using the embankment method and put into operation with the completion of the Dortmund-Ems Canal in 1899. It is 165 m long, 10 m wide and is closed with two mortise gates .
- New lock
In 1955/56, a further and wider lock chamber was built parallel to the old lock. It is 165 m long and 12 m wide.
In the period from 2013 to 2015, the system was completely overhauled and brought up to the state of the art for around 8 million euros . The lock received new sliding gates and it was set up for remote control and monitoring by the Meppen control center. Since not all work could be carried out during ongoing operations, the new lock had to be temporarily closed and shipping had to be diverted via the old lock. As part of this work, the lock bridge was completely replaced in 2013.
Theoretically, the new lock would the passage of barges of Class Vb allow some neighboring locks in the northern section of the Dortmund-Ems canal can currently only vehicles up to Class IV ( Europe ship record).
