The Meppen lock is a lock on the Dortmund-Ems Canal . It is located in Meppen , in the middle of the Emsland .

Lock group

The Meppen lock was built between 1953 and 1956 and consists of two separate lock chambers, each designed as an economy lock . It is therefore also known as the Meppen lock group. The Meppen Waterways and Shipping Office is responsible .

The lock chambers are made of sheet piling and the upper and lower heads are made of solid reinforced concrete . The chambers are closed with a lifting actuator towards the upper water . Lifting gates are arranged in the underwater, the counterweights of which are each supported by two striking steel frame structures. Due to its historical and urban significance, the lock group is recognized as an architectural monument .

The eastern Kleine Schleuse Meppen has a usable length of 100 m and is 12 m wide. The western Great Meppen Lock is also 12 m wide, but it is 165 m long and was completely renovated in 2005–2007. Theoretically, it could accommodate inland vessels of class Vb , but the neighboring locks are only designed for vessels up to class IV ( European ship ). With a fall height of 7.5 m, about 15,660 m³ of water are required for a mountain lock. To reduce consumption, half is taken from the two savings basins, which are filled with every valley lock.

The Meppen lock group is served on site at set times. The average traffic volume is 33 ships per day.
