Nicolaus Berkhout (born February 15, 1813 in Sartam (today: Zaandam), † October 21, 1892 in Wachenheim ) was a Dutch genre and landscape painter.

family

He was born as the son of the landowners Hendrik and Katharina Berkhout, née Hartmann. The family was Protestant. Nicolaus Berkhout was married to Marie Rosine Antoinette, née Nieuwkerk (born December 6, 1808 in Amsterdam , † November 1, 1875 in Darmstadt ). The couple had at least three children:

  • Moritz Georg Julius Berkhout (* 1836 in Wiesbaden-Biebrich ; † March 14, 1850 in Mainz )
  • Katharina Marie Isabelle (born June 28, 1839 in Amersfoort , † March 14, 1868 in Bessungen )
  • Henry Nicolaus (born March 1, 1844 in Sartam, † December 3, 1877 in Seeheim ). He completed an apprenticeship as a sculptor with Johann Baptist Scholl in Darmstadt.

life and work

Nicolaus Berkhout probably completed his training at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Amsterdam. From 1834 to 1842 he lived and worked in Hilversum and Amsterdam . In 1834, 1836, 1841 and 1842 he sent pictures to exhibitions in the Netherlands. In 1842 he was on a journey with a fellow sculptor. In 1850 the eldest son of Nicolaus Berkhout died in Mainz and on the occasion of this event it is documented that Nicolaus Berkhout's father-in-law was living in Biebrich at the time . He was already painting in the Grand Duchy of Hesse and neighboring areas based on the pictures known from this period . Apart from that, there is hardly any evidence of his biography until around 1860. His connection to the Grand Duchy of Darmstadt could have come about through the local court painter Joseph Hartmann , who is believed to be related to the mother of Nicolaus Berkhout. From 1863 Nicolaus Berkhout lived with his family in Darmstadt, from 1867 in Bessungen, and from 1871 at the latest in Seeheim. Wachenheim in the Palatinate (Bavaria) is proven to be the place of residence of Nicolaus Berkhout from 1880 .

Berkhout received numerous private and some public contracts from Hessen and its surroundings. The paintings from numerous private commissions are often still in family hands today, so it is difficult to get an overview of Berkhout's work. Prince Ernst zu Leiningen was among the clients several times . From 1860 onwards there are numerous depictions of landscapes from Starkenburg , Rheinhessen and from 1871 the Palatinate. He painted naturalistically , his representations are characterized by attention to detail and sometimes also by the fact that he integrated a current event into the picture. Usually Berkhout signed and dated his works. The last dated works that are known of him are from 1887. In 1987 the painter was honored by a traveling exhibition, which the Sparkasse Bad Dürkheim showed at four locations in the region.
