The Veenhuser Königsmoor is a nature reserve in the Lower Saxony municipality of Moormerland and the city of Leer in the district of Leer .

The nature reserve with the sign NSG WE 103 is about 215  hectares . It includes the 33.2 hectare FFH area "Wolfmeer". In the nature reserve in 1942 reported, 26.9 hectare nature reserve "are Wolf Sea " and the 1977 reported, 58-hectare conservation area "Am Wolf sea, Veenhuser Königsmoor" risen. The area has been a nature reserve since December 29, 2017. The responsible lower nature conservation authority is the district of Leer.

The nature reserve is north-east of Leer and south of the Moormerland district of Warsingsfehn . It protects an upland moor that has in some cases been significantly altered by drainage and peat removal . The nature reserve, in which peat thicknesses of 0.6 to 3 meters are still preserved in the core area, is made up of four connected sub-areas:

  • Subspace 1 comprises the FFH area “Wolfmeer” and mostly the former nature reserve “Wolfmeer”. This is a near-natural small raised bog with a silting bog eye with cotton grass - peat moss - swinging lawns and intact raised and transitional moor with peat moss - rich bults and gullies . The small raised bog is largely surrounded by moor birch forest. Areas adjoining to the west are partly also made up of bog forests or are used as grassland .
  • Subspace 2 comprises the former landscape protection area "Am Wolf-Meer, Veenhuser Königsmoor". To the north, it connects to sub-area 1 and is characterized by various stages of succession on drained and often peated raised bogs. In larger areas, moor forest grows with grassland areas interspersed in places. Larger grassland areas can also be found in the south and north-east of the sub-area in particular. The Kolk Königsmoor, created by sand mining , lies within the moor forest .
  • Subspace 3 adjoins subspace 2 to the southeast. It is polded, so that there are good prerequisites for the regeneration of raised bogs through water retention and rewetting. The sub-area is characterized by rewetted raised bog locations in which the raised bog can regenerate. In places the moor forest is stagnating. This is followed by grassland areas on raised bogs, which are structured to the southeast by hedges and trees.
  • The subspace 4, which adjoins the subspace 3 to the southeast, is occupied by wet grassland on peat high moor. Here, too, small swamp forests grow in places. The plots are partially divided by hedges and woody trees. Sub-area 4 is the only one in the area of the city of Leer, while the other sub-areas are in the municipality of Moormerland.

The sub-areas partially serve as compensation areas . Further compensation areas are connected to the nature reserve.

In the nature reserve, living raised bogs have been preserved in some areas. Peated areas are partially renatured through rewetting measures. The bog forests are mainly formed by bog birch and sand birch , pedunculate oak , alder , various willows , buckthorn and rowan . Broken birch forests have developed on a small scale at more nutrient-rich locations. In places, grassland areas are designed as species-rich turf grass turf.

The nature reserve is home to lapwing and snipe , among others . The grassland areas are to be developed as a habitat for other meadow birds . Furthermore, the nature reserve provides a suitable habitat for various amphibians and reptiles as Moorfrosch and Waldeidechse as well as dragonflies , including Torfmosaikjungfer , white-faced darter and moon Azurjungfer . On the high moorland settle Schmalblättriges and Schei Diges cotton grass , Sundew , bells and rosemary , Ordinary cranberry , bog lily , white beak-sedge and various peat mosses , for example Spießtorfmoos and Magellan peat moss . In the area of the moor forests, you can find nail bushes and pipe grass .

The approximately 4 hectare Kolk Königsmoor is used by a fishing club from the south bank as fishing waters, for which the water is stocked with fish. Eel , perch , tench , trout , pikeperch , carp and various white fish are found in the water . Silting areas with rare plant species are particularly pronounced on the north and east banks of the water.

The area drains via Warsingsfehn Canal and Georgswieke to the Sauteler Canal . The nature reserve is crossed by several public roads. There is a path around Kolk Königsmoor where information boards about the nature reserve are to be set up.
