Henryk Waniek (born March 4, 1942 in Oświęcim ) is a Polish painter , set designer , writer , art critic and essayist .

Waniek became known as a surrealist painter. In his pictures, which are often symmetrically or concentrically arranged, there are numerous traditional symbols such as windows, chalices, ladders, devils, rainbows, shooting stars. He himself speaks of a magical description of the world. His paintings have been shown in more than 50 solo and group exhibitions in Poland and abroad and have received several prizes.

As an essayist, he was especially recognized by the trilogy Hermes w Górach Śląskich (Hermes in Oberschlesien, 1994), Opis podróży mistycznej z Oswięcimia do Zgorzelca 1257–1957 (description of a mystical journey from Auschwitz to Görlitz 1257–1957, 1996) and Pitagoras na trawie ( 1996) Pythagoras on the Meadow, 1997). In Wyprzedaż duchów (Sale of Ghosts, 2007) he describes a journey through the Sudetenland.

In addition, Waniek also wrote four novels: Dziady berlińskie (Berlin grandfathers, 1995), Dziady paryskie (Parisian grandfathers, 1998), Finis Silesiae (2003) and Jak Johannes Kepler jadąc do Żagania na Śląsku zahaczył o księżyc (Like Johannes Kepler on the trip to Żagań in Silesia caught the moon). Cmentarz nieśmiertelnych (Cemetery of Immortals, 2015) is the story of the Szklarska Poręba artists' colony . Andrzej Titkow made the documentary Sztuka błądzenia (The Art of Walking) about him in 1998 .
