Life

Georg Hörnschemeyer was born in Hollage, which has been part of the municipality of Wallenhorst in the Osnabrück district since 1972 . His family comes from the former Hörnschen Hof , a Meierhof in Wallenhorst.

After completing school, he learned the craft of sculpting from 1921 to 1925 with Jakob Holtmann , who worked as a cathedral sculptor at St. Peter's Cathedral in Osnabrück. After several years of hiking, Hörnschemeyer studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich . After the end of the Second World War he settled in Osnabrück. He married Maria Caesmann (* 1923), who died in 1971.

Hörnschemeyer died in 1983 at the age of 76. He was buried in the old cemetery in Bad Iburg . There was already the grave of his wife Maria and other members of his wife's family. Hörnschemeyer designed the tombstone for the family grave.

Works

Hörnschemeyer became particularly well known as a carver of Christmas cribs in the form of the so-called Osnabrück cribs . They consist of a piece of wood. He furnished a large number of Roman Catholic churches with his work, including crucifixes and stations of the cross . Hörnschemeyer worked in wood, stone and bronze.

One of his works in public space is the Schäferbrunnen on Rosenplatz in Osnabrück . The well, which is also called by the shepherd Adolf Heinrich Ströker Strökerbrunnen is called, was built 1904th He carried a sculpture by Lukas Memken (1860–1934), which was melted down after a metal collection during the Second World War. In 1950, Hörnschemeyer created a good shepherd out of sandstone as a replacement .

In the church of St. Michael in Pinneberg (Schleswig-Holstein) there is a crucifix from 1957. Hörnschemeyer also carved the stations of the cross for the church. He also made Stations of the Cross for the St. Franziskus Church in Hamburg , which burned out during the Second World War , as well as a statue of the Sacred Heart . In 1958, the Osnabrück Sacred Heart Church , which was badly damaged in World War II, received a statue of St. Joseph made by him.

In 1960 he carved a nativity scene which he gave to the Osnabrück bishop Helmut Hermann Wittler . It is regularly shown in crib exhibitions. A crib from Hörnschemeyer's workshop has been in the Catholic parish church of St. Marien in Quakenbrück since 1965 . A church in Merzen is also equipped with a crib by Hörnschemeyer. However, it consists of individual figures.
