After the death of the Osnabrück cathedral sculptor Heinrich Seling (1842–1912), Holtmann came to Osnabrück in 1914 on the initiative of the later Archbishop Hermann Wilhelm Berning . There he took over the workshop of the sculptor Seling, which is located in Herderstr. 4 found. Around 1925, around 15 people were employed in Holtmann's studio, including carvers, ornamenters, painters and joiners. He spent the last 20 years of his life in Osnabrück. One of his most important works is the Christmas crib in Osnabrück Cathedral (1919–1929). The Christmas crib of the Kamp Abbey Church in Kamp-Lintfort is also attributed to Holtmann.
